Reply with quote | #1 | Have any of your children ever auditioned for the show? How far did they get? What was the experience like? Do we have any "Top 20" parents from any season on this site? |

Reply with quote | #2 | There was a girl that audtioned from the old studio we were at last season or was it the one before that can't recall. She made it to the second round and then was cut. She said that there were some pretty amazing people that didn't make it while others that weren't so talented were pushed through. They were pretty much told that the show was for entertainment purposes only nothing more. By the way this girl that tried out is amazing and for her not to get farther says something I think. __________________ Forgive the ones that hate you and love the ones that love you!

Reply with quote | #3 | Same here. We had a dancer from our studio audition last season and made it to 2nd round. Then cut. She also said there were some amazing dancers that got cut. |

Reply with quote | #4 | I DEF. agree with SpitFire, ALOT of it is entertainment, don't get me wrong, there are alot of talented dancers but ALOT of other dancers that should have gone through. My middle daughter was very good friends with Ali Nance, this current season, she auditioned in New Orleans and went straight the vegas. She got cut and is an amazing dancer, danced with Travis Wall at his moms studio. She left OH to live in VA for that. It is about 75% what you see on TV, the rest is 'fishy'. Alot of underhanding goes on that many people catch on to. Just like when you hear the things about AI, most are true, they do what is best for the show, not the best singers always, alot of COI. That one boy that was on America's Got Talent, he was pissed when they made him do that HSM dance, they knew he wouldn't do that well and not make it. __________________ Dance/Ice Skating/Cheer/Gymnastics Mom |

Reply with quote | #5 | We knew one of the top 20 on the first season of SYTYCD Canada. I think she made it as far as top 8 or 6 -- can't remember.
Anyhow what she told me was that first of all the entire experience, for those that do get to the top 20, is exhausting. There are not only hours and hours of rehearsals but so many other things that you have to do such as promotional events, appearances, photo shoots, interviews...etc. In her case things worked out much better than she had ever expected and it has been for her a springboard to so many opportunities.
We do know people who made it through auditions, people that didn't, people who got to finals week -- all over the map. |

Reply with quote | #6 | I agree one of dd's really good friends auditioned and he is incredible. Made it to Vegas twice but never further. From what he said it is not what you see on tv and what they do doesn't always make sense. OHDancemom73 we competed against Ali several times and were very suprised she didn't make it. We didn't see much of her past her initial audition. She is very talented hopefully she will reaudition. |

Reply with quote | #10 | I know several people who auditioned and got to Vegas, and then I know others who didn't make it past the screening to even get to the judges. Some of THESE were better dancers than some who made it to Vegas, but that's show business. It's all about perception, which is unfortunate but it's just a lesson to learn if you want to be in entertainment! __________________ momtodancinggirl |

Reply with quote | #11 | I have heard plenty of criticism of SYTYCD but I think people need to remember a few things:
* Dance is subjective.
* Tens of thousands of people audition for that show, so the panel of TV judges can't possibly see them all.
* They are casting a TV show. SYTYCD wasn't created because of a dire need to know who the best dancer is. It was created for entertainment.
* The show casts diversity of gender, race, dance style and geography among other things. They want to attract and retain a large audience.
* The show doesn't pretend that it's trying to find America's best dancer. They are clear about the fact that they are searching for America's "favorite" dancer.
* Even after all of that, all the dancers on SYTYCD are incredibly talented.

Reply with quote | #12 | I agree with EmoGirl. People shouldn't take this stuff so seriously and try to pretend that it's anything more than it is. It's a made-for-television showcase of great dancers. To suggest "fishy" or "underhanded" activity is just so far off base. The production company can put anyone on the show they choose. __________________ Elaine |

Reply with quote | #13 | The "fishy" part is that they sometimes make the contestants lie about themselves-several have had to say that they're untrained or not for the number of years that they really were. Caitlyn Kinney from last year is a prime example. She started gymnastics at 6, competing in lyrical, jazz, acrobatics at 12. Then she went on to the Baltimore School for the Arts and the North Carolina Dance Theatre. She said on the show she'd only been training for 5 yrs. She's 22 so you do the math. |

Reply with quote | #15 | The first thing they look at, like with most jobs in the entertainment business is looks. The producers have turned away many terrific dancers simply because they felt they weren't good looking enough.
Second is dance talent- and recently they have been into this whole wanting to see the dancer "grow" schtick.
Last is personality. If you are too serious and/or quiet, you are cut.
This is where things get sticky. Dancers are trained from day 1 not to speak, the work is done with the mind and body not the voice. It can take a dancer a while to come out of their shell and if you can't let them see come spark during the audition process, you are cut for that too.
Lastly- when all is said and done SYTYCD is a reality TV show. Not a Broadway or movie musical or a dance company or even a video for that matter. People with dance backrounds are looking for completely different things than your average viewer. __________________ Suzanne: Dance Teacher, Studio Owner, Judge, DanceMom! |

Reply with quote | #16 | I like SYTYCD and I like the dancing. It's entertaining reality tv. . . for a non dance audience.
My concern for an aspiring dancer, is that the show appears to represent reality and really it is very fabricated. |

DDs know him also and looked for him season 5 & 6 auditions. It seems to hurt the dancers when they know you. If they do not see you "grow", I think you are cut for this. Maybe they saw the same thing at both auditions. |
